Could you imagine being a new mother and not being able to feed, clothe or shelter your newborn baby? For many new mothers living on the streets or in temporary shelters, that is the horrific reality of their lives. We see it each day at our Franciscan Food Center in Boston and at St Francis Inn and Women’s Center in inner-city Philadelphia.

The impact of homelessness on mothers is profound. We watch them experience anger, self-blame, sadness, fear and hopelessness. As a result, many children raised in homelessness experience poor physical and mental health as well as missed educational opportunities.

As we begin to celebrate all mothers during the month of May, the Franciscan Friars need your help raising $10,000 so we can supply these new mothers, who come to us in desperate need, with the basic necessities for their children’s survival.

Your generous donation enables us to purchase diapers, wipes, formula and so much more to make their child’s life safe and sound- a mother’s constant dream. I recently met a mother at St. Francis Inn who asked for disposable feeding bottles because she had no regular access to running water to clean reusable bottles. Their individual stories of struggle would shock and disturb you!

This year, as we celebrate the gift of our Mothers, maybe instead of flowers, candy or jewelry, a few simple items that can help these women care for and comfort their children may be a far better gift in honor of your Mom. Send a mother in need your love and your Mom’s love by giving these new mothers a real sign of a Mother’s Love.  Make a donation today, and make a difference in at least 2 lives– a mother and her child!
